We made these for a special group- Fire Station 37 is just about a mile from our house and they are the ones who have responded several times over the years when my little boys stopped breathing. Its been a long time since we have had to call them and this year as we tried to think of all the things we are grateful for, these First Responders topped the list. These cupcakes are just so fun and really easy to make. I did a base coat of frosting on sugar cones so that there wouldn't be any ... VIEW POST
Pomegranate Salsa
This was so good! My friend Genni hosted Bunko at her house and had a whole counter full of delicious food- pulled pork, beans, rice, tortillas and a bowl of this.....heaven! I thought about it for 3 days after and had to make it. I am not ashamed to say that over the next day I ate the whole bowl myself. It is so sweet and spicy and delicious just on its own! It is perfect over a salad, with rice, on a taco...the list goes on and on. To make this Salsa combine one jar of this: (I put the ... VIEW POST
Farm Cake
I knew the rooster had to be on top of the barn and the cow behind a fence but the rest just found their places as I went along. It was a really fun cake to put together and I loved the smash cakes that went with it. I used a #5 frosting tip to make the grass around the sides. The Barn on top was made out of rice crispy treats and covered in fondant. The horses head is made from Rice Crispy treat so that it wouldn't be so heavy. Old MacDonald's got nothing on me! (To learn to make fondant go ... VIEW POST
Superman Grooms Cake
Of course the Groom's name is really Clark. This is a great example of using different fondants for different reasons. I always choose homemade first because it tastes the best, works great for decorating that doesn't have to stand up on its own, and is the cheapest. Duff makes a great fondant that comes in all different colors but it does not dry hard and stiff, it is great for covering cakes because it has a nice stretch to it, and they have come up with nice flavors relatively. I only buy ... VIEW POST
Rhinestone Wedding Cake
This was one of the first wedding cakes I did and I was nervous! I loved the square tiers and the rhinestone ribbon was just fabulous. I love the look of smooth fondant but I don't love the taste, and people usually prefer the smooth frosting option. To get smooth and even frosting I give my cake a crumb coat then put it in the refrigerator to chill. Once it is chilled I fill a large zip lock bag (a frosting bag works of course but I found I had to refill it too fast) and cut a 1/2 inch corner ... VIEW POST
Baseball! Cake and Cupcakes
Batter up and batter baked! For most fondant decorating I use homemade fondant (go HERE for the recipe,) but for red and black decorating I always buy fondant because making those dark colors requires so much gel that it becomes a sticky mess. I like Duff brand the best because it tastes half-way decent for store bought fondant (I especially like the red flavor) and it is really flexible. It does not work well for decorations that need to stand up on their own like flowers. To make red and ... VIEW POST
