Making my own fondant has been a money saver, and one of the things I love about working with it is getting my own colors and hues just right. But grey, oh grey has driven me nuts. I ended up with a huge ball of brownish colored fondant once because I kept adding and adding more colors and then fondant to try and get the color right. Never Again! Here are a few tips that are tried and true.
One option is to use Americolor Food Color Super Black 13.5 Oz, of all the food coloring Gels this is the only one that works to give you a true grey when you add just a little.
If you don’t have Americolor you can mix a little purple, green and blue into your fondant. Or use Wiltons Black food gel. It will not make your fondant grey unfortunately but it will get you started. If if your color looks too green add more purple, if its too purple add more green. Just a little at a time remembering that colors will darken overnight. I work with a small piece when adding color so that when I add it back in to the larger ball of fondant I know its not too much color.
Another trick is to use Duff Decorating Cake Graffiti, Silver, 1.5-Ounce. This is what I used when my Fondant was too brown and I was sick of adding more color. I gave it a nice coat of the silver spray and it looked fabulous for this Skylander cake.
The spray also works really well for small pieces when you don’t need to color a bunch of fondant.
