Attaching Ribbon to a Frosted Cake

May 14, 2013

I love cakes with smooth frosting instead of fondant, and it is possible to attach ribbon or fabric by following simple steps. Make sure your cake is cold so you don’t dent the frosting, measure with a measuring tape and add 1/2″ for overlap. If you have chosen a ribbon that is not double-sided, first attach wax paper to the back of the ribbon by adhering double-sided tape to the ribbon. Trim the wax paper so that it doesn’t show from the front. This backing will keep the ribbon from looking greasy. I used royal icing to attach the ribbon in the back. Another option is to use contact paper, I just lined the top of the ribbon with the edge and cut off the excess. Worked beautifully!
