The first step is making your Grey Fondant. (I linked to my post on it because it can be a PAIN!) I make sure my cake is nice and chilled, then roll the fondant out with one of these mats- It works really easily- making sure the cake is cold helps the fondant to set quickly as you lay it over the sides. To make the side turrets I roll a long piece of Rice Crispy treat on a mat to get it as smooth as possible, spread a thin coat of frosting over it and then cover it with a thin layer of white ... Mermaid Ruffle Cake
I was making this cake at 2am so I forgot to take any how to pics- fortunately I have used these techniques before! Go here to see how I did the Ruffles, and for the Mermaid I used my Rice Crispy Figure technique. I form the base and then cover it with fondant. It makes a lighter cake topper than solid fondant. The kids love saving and eating them too! I used RC for the tails on the Cupcakes as well. For the ocean it was fun to make crazy and different shapes for my "reef" and for the fish ... VIEW POST
Pink Ruffle Cake
Ruffle Cakes are just so pretty, I think its one of the prettiest ways to make a girly cake. I start by making the outline of my four big flowers so I can space them correctly. I use this technique here to fringe the edges. I just keep adding (and adding...) strings of fondant until my circle is filled in. I then fold the edge over on a strip of fondant, and roll it into a small center flower. You can see in the first photo how I did the ruffles between the big flowers, just ... VIEW POST
A Baby is Brewing Cupcakes
These were for a Couples baby shower- the mom to be wanted it fun for all the men that were invited. I thought it was a really cute idea! To make the little beer mugs I used Homemade Fondant and just broke down the shape- rectangles for the cup, circles with the centers cut out for the handles. I used a flower cutter to get the frothy foam look :). For the pretzels I could have used fondant but instead went with Modeling Chocolate just because it tastes better. I used clear sanding sugar ... VIEW POST
Chickens
We love our chickens. We have had 3 sets of chicks and to look at all these pictures you would think "oh happy chicken farmers." Well that may be the case now but it did not start out that way. Jonathans favorite food is eggs. LOVES eggs. When Scotty was 3 and told us he didn't like eggs Jonathan said "that is going to be a problem because in this house we will be eating lots of eggs." So it makes PERFECT sense that about 5 years ago, for a surprise birthday present the kids and I went and ... VIEW POST
Easy Blueberry Muffins
Ok another "NOT a cake post"- I am taking a couple months off while the kids are out of school and we are having fun baking all kinds of other things! My 14 year old made these, (I decided this summer he needs to learn to use the kitchen and not just rely on his sister) and we all loved them, we used fresh blueberries we picked but you can use frozen as well. They weren't heavy like a dense muffin, or as light as cake, just perfectly in between! 1 cup flour 1 tsp baking powder pinch of salt ... VIEW POST
