This cake was actually not as time consuming as it looks. I built a rectangle shape cake and stuck it in the fridge to chill. Since I didn't want to worry about a heavy cake "lid" I built the top out of rice crispy treat. To get the wood grain look I used this recipe for Modeling Chocolate, using light and dark melts to make 2 different colors. I made long rolls of the MC and then started wrapping them together mixing a little but not completely so that there would still be streaks of ... VIEW POST
Setting Up for Dipping!
Before I start dipping I get my whole set up ready. It makes a difference to have what you need right there when you are dealing with melted chocolate! A. I line a cookie sheet with wax paper- perfect to catch all the drips, easy to change out as needed, and easy clean up. When I am done with dipping I just pour the left over onto the paper to let harden and save for later. And my melting pots- these are perfect for pops, they keep the temperature consistent unlike microwaving chocolate. B. I ... VIEW POST
Wax Paper Replicas
I have used this technique for so many cakes- replicating a well known figure is hard because it requires exact measurements or the character looks off. I find an outline, coloring page, or black and white photo of the character on-line, enlarge or shrink it to the size I need and then trace it onto wax paper. I then start with the big outlines- like the shape of the head, then work to the smaller details like eyes. I place the outline on my rolled fondant, and use my small sharp scissors to ... VIEW POST
Perfect Match
This is the long post about how we got our gorgeous girl Tallula, Bens CCI skilled companion. Scroll to the bottom for the beginning! May 20 2014 Well we are home now- but I want to post about the last few days of Dog Training. They flew by so fast! Partially because all of a sudden we were all realizing "ack! its almost time to go home and leave all our friends!" which was really sad, and also that we were going to be on our own with these dogs! I felt like I wanted the trainers to follow ... VIEW POST
Perfect 40 Cake
I love these cute little figures- I started them a few days in advance so they would have plenty of time to dry. I used a pan the same size as the cake to set them on so I wouldn't make them too big or too small. Marshmallow Fondant was perfect for these and I had fun with the bright colors! I formed the bodies around popsical sticks, gently pulling them out before they dried- I wanted to be able to put my popsicle sticks with the heads attached through the bodies and into the cake. I hope you ... VIEW POST
Boy Scout Cupcakes
These were so fun, it was great coming up with "all things scouts" for these cupcakes and I think my favorite was the pocket knife. For the silver accents I used Duff edible silver spray, and for the fondant decorations I used Homemade Fondant. In total I made a fire pit (with chocolate "rocks"), tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, and camp sign. ... VIEW POST
