These were so fun to come up with! The photo says it all but I used homemade fondant that I colored with brown and just a tiny bit of green gel paste. For the "seams" and "stitches" I used Wiltons Melts. The photo says the rest! For my favorite homemade Fondant recipe go HERE. ... VIEW POST
Its just a Cake Blog
I am not a blogger, my creativity lies more with my hands and eyes than actually writing down really coherent streams of thought. But I think this is more for me than for anyone else. The last 7 years have been nuts, in good and hard ways. In 2006 I was pregnant with my 4th child BEN, and I can honestly say that I was thinking (naively) "I got this." I am 5th of 12 children and I loved growing up in a large family, so 3 little kids was busy but not crazy, it was all I had ever wanted to ... VIEW POST
Orange Ruffle
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these cakes. They are really beautiful! I have the basic technique HERE but I want to post more about getting the colors right. I did the ombre look before with THIS cake but I thought it needed more shades. With this Orange cake I weighed my white fondant before doing that layer so I had a basic idea of how much I needed for each shade. I then rolled 5 different shades and the first shade almost looked too dark when I first put it on but once I added a few more colors it ... VIEW POST
Fresh Lemon Curd
Without FAIL this is the best lemon filling. The tart lemon really stands out whether in a cupcake or just a thin layer between cake rounds. On the stove using a double boiler (or a glass bowl on top of a pot which works perfectly) combine: 8 egg yolks (from large eggs) 2 whole eggs 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 cup lemon juice (about 7-8 lemons but it does not need to be fresh squeezed- I use real lemon juice that I buy at the store.) Stir over boiling water, about 10-15 minutes until it coats your ... VIEW POST
Monsters Inc
I think anyone can be their own best decorator- as long as they have good tools and products to work with! I love homemade marshmallow fondant for any decorating that doesn't have to dry super stiffly. It tastes so much better and is really easy to work with. Go HERE for my Fondant Tutorial. To make these Monsters Inc cupcakes I used all MM fondant except for the black, I buy black and red (Duff brand) because those colors are really hard to get deep and true with gel. To get the "bangs" on Boo ... VIEW POST
Brown Sugar Buttercream
I made this after trying a meringue version that was WONDERFUL but a little sweet. Swiss Meringue is one of my favorite frostings so I thought I would just try it with brown sugar. And yes.... HEAVEN! It was so good. But then again frosting is why I started making cakes so I get excited when I find a new favorite! 6 large egg whites 1 2/3 cups packed dark-brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 sticks (2 cups) unsalted butter, room temperature Mix the egg whites and sugar in a mixing bowl and ...
