When I make figures for my cakes and cupcakes I don't like to use solid fondant or gum paste because they become SO heavy. I like to make a rice crispy base that will be hard enough to support but not as dense. And for some reason kids think they are the most fun to eat! I make my rice crispy treat with 6 cups marshmallows, and 6 cups rice crispy cereal, and just 2 teaspoons of butter in the pan or bowl to help with the stickiness. This will be a lot dryer than the treats you make to ... VIEW POST
Heart Cake Pops
Making shaped cake pops is a little harder than the simple round pops but they are so fun, makes it worth the effort. When I made these heart shaped pops I rolled my cake pop mix with a rolling pin so that I could cut them out with a cookie cutter. I made them smaller than I wanted the actual pop to be because the two layers of chocolate (double dipping saves cracking!) really add to the size of the pop. Once I had the hearts cut out, I chilled them overnight (or at least 3 hours) so they were ... VIEW POST
Cake Pop Prep
Cake Pops are not forgiving, they will plop off the stick, crack and leak but there are a few things to do make sure you are prepped for great pops. ~When mixing your cake and frosting, make sure your cake balls are JUST wet enough to stick together, they shouldn't crumble when you roll them but should stick together without feeling wet. After the balls are rolled place them in an airtight container that is lined with a paper towel and refrigerate them over night. (The paper towel will absorb ... VIEW POST
Giant Cupcakes
This is the cutest picture ever! I am so in love with these babies. To make these cupcakes I used the Wilton Giant Cupcake pan but the dark coating of the pan tends to cook cakes too dark, I was using vanilla cake and even though it wasn't burnt it looked overcooked and brown. I cooled the cakes and then lined the pan with a strip of fondant to create my own cupcake wrapper which I wrapped around the cake. I used a rounded tool to gently mold the ends together. For the tops I used the Rose ... VIEW POST
Rose Wedding Toppers
These roses were really pretty simple to make, I just needed to be sure I gave them enough drying time. I didn't ruffle the edges of the petals because I wanted a more simple, clean look. For each rose I started with one petal wrapped around the end of a cake pop stick for my center, then added 3 petals at a time, letting it dry in an egg crate with saran wrap bunched to support the shape as it dried. I used the same size cake pan as the top tier of the cake to "practice" placement so I ... VIEW POST
Purple Rose Cake
This cake is one of my favorites. It is so pretty and easy to do with a little practice. Its not meant to be perfect, in fact that is what I love about it. Go HERE under "Tricks of the Trade" for details on how to make this pretty cake! For the ombre color I started with the white and then started adding just a TINY bit of coloring at a time (wiltons gels) to create the next shade and then the next.... ... VIEW POST
